Areeba Baig

Areeba Baig (b. 2002) is a Pakistan-born, London-based artist and designer working primarily with wood dyes and oils.

Her practice is rooted in themes of intentional and unintentional migration, feminism, and one's inner conflict. Informed by her background in Product and Industrial Design, Baig explores the relationship between materiality and visual narrative, often drawing on her deep-rooted familial connection to craftsmanship and her upbringing across Lahore, Sharjah and London.

Contrasting emotive storytelling with the solidity of wood, her process begins with water and dyes, embracing their unpredictable nature so that each work evolves organically.

She holds a BA in Product and Industrial Design from UAL and is currently expanding her practice from her studio in South London alongside teaching.

The artist paints memories of nights spent in Sharjah with her family, sitting together and watching a bonfire as it lifted into the night. It isn't a painting of a specific moment, but more of a reflection on how those evenings have left a mark over time. Painted from memory, she focused on the feeling of warmth and movement rather than trying to capture the scene exactly as it was.

light from the funicular, bergen

Baig reflects on her first solo trip to Bergen. Arriving to rain and heavy clouds, she felt a sense of solitude. Later, taking the funicular to the top of the mountain, she was struck by sudden sunlight and an expansive view. The moment held both awe and loneliness. A delicately painted dancing figure emerges within the surface, embodying her acceptance within solitude.

Blue port

Created after becoming the first woman in her family to travel alone, this work inhabits the space between freedom and guilt. The blue emptiness slowly resolves into the landscape of the fjords. Though rooted in the artist's own experience, the figure is rendered as a man; a reflection of how independence has traditionally belonged to men in her culture. The work becomes an act of breaking inherited tradition.

Baig reflects on the quiet awe and sense of smallness that come with daybreak. In Islam, the adhan, the call to prayer, marks the beginning of the day and invites a moment of reflection before the world awakens. Daybreak appears throughout her practice as a recurring motif. It creates a space to contemplate spirituality within the stillness of her surroundings.
